Midwestern melancholy & the 3AM hot cheetos theory

just heard the new Lizzo album for the first time in my car on the way to work yesterday, windows down in Rogers Park in the middle of winter because i forgot how cold november feels, and that bassline hit me so hard i started crying in the parking lot of the Jewel Osco on Sheridan. i know, dramatic. i’ve been that person, the one who cries in Target at the end of aisle five over a $3.99 candle that smells like childhood, but this felt different, honest.

i’m biracial, white mom and black dad, grew up in the suburbs so i spent my life explaining to people that yes my dad exists, while my hair refused to do anything but puff out in this humid nonsense only to go bone straight when 25 degrees hit. i started therapy this fall because i realized i’ve spent most of my life rehearsing my elevator pitch for a world that keeps asking for it.

does anyone else feel like they’re always performing parts of themselves, even when they’re alone?
